A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts (or ruptures), keeping part of the brain from getting enough blood and oxygen. Stroke is a leading cause of severe long-term disability and reduces mobility in more than half of stroke survivors over age 65. Healing the whole person But the effects of stroke are not only physical. After a stroke, survivors may sometimes experience challenges with communication, emotions and behavior, which can be difficult not only for the survivor but for their caregivers as well. That’s why Capital Region offers the Happy Achievers’ Stroke Support Group, available for stroke survivors, caregivers and others who are interested in increasing their understanding of the emotional, social and educational needs of stroke survivors. Research suggests that having a strong support system after a stroke speeds recovery, makes it more complete and can reduce symptoms of depression and isolation.
